Ganesh Jayanti is an auspicious Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the god of wisdom, intellect, and prosperity. It is mainly observed in Maharashtra and parts of South India during the month of Magha (January–February). Devotees worship Lord Ganesha on this day to seek success, clarity of mind, and blessings for new beginnings. Ganesh Jayanti is also known as Magha Ganesh Jayanti or Tilkund Chaturthi.
Creation of Lord Ganesha by Goddess Parvati:
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati created a child from the turmeric paste used for her bath and gave him life. She named him Ganesha and appointed him as her guard while she went for a bath.
Conflict with Lord Shiva
When Lord Shiva returned and tried to enter, young Ganesha stopped him, unaware of who he was. Enraged by being denied entry, Lord Shiva beheaded Ganesha in anger.
Elephant Head and Divine Rebirth
On seeing Parvati’s grief, Lord Shiva realized his mistake and promised to revive the child. He ordered his attendants to bring the head of the first living being they found facing north, which was an elephant. Ganesha was brought back to life with an elephant’s head.
Blessings Given by Lord Shiva
Lord Shiva blessed Ganesha, declaring him the leader of the ganas, the first deity to be worshipped before any ritual, and the remover of all obstacles. This divine rebirth is celebrated as Ganesh Jayanti.
Ganesh Jayanti symbolizes: Victory of wisdom over ego / Power of devotion and divine grace / New beginnings and spiritual awakening.
Worshipping Lord Ganesha on this day is believed to remove negative energies, clear obstacles, and bring peace, prosperity, and success in life.
