Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga Temple is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and holds immense importance in Hindu spirituality. Nestled in the lush greenery of the Sahyadri hills near Pune, this temple is not only a religious destination but also a place of natural beauty and deep spiritual energy.
The origin of Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is rooted in ancient Hindu mythology. According to legends, a demon named Bhima, the son of Kumbhakarna (brother of Ravana), performed severe penance and became powerful. He began to trouble sages and devotees, spreading fear across the region.
A great devotee of Lord Shiva named Kamarupeshwar continued his devotion despite Bhima’s oppression. Enraged, Bhima attempted to kill him. At that moment, Lord Shiva appeared and defeated the demon Bhima.
After this victory, Lord Shiva manifested in the form of a Jyotirlinga at this very place, giving rise to Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga.
The Jyotirlinga is believed to have been self-manifested (Swayambhu). After slaying the demon Bhima, Lord Shiva’s divine energy took the form of a radiant lingam.
It is also believed that the sacred Bhima River originates from this region, flowing due to the sweat of Lord Shiva after the intense battle. This further enhances the spiritual importance of the temple.
